This type of candid image stands in contrast to the propagandistic poses found in Nazi election posters. Release of intimate photos of this type was carefully controlled by Nazi propagandists, to avoid softening the carefully crafted public image of Hitler as a strong leader. This image was part of a series distributed in cigarette packs, intended for collection as trading cards, and helped average Germans to identify with their leader.
